The Association of Maine Archives and Museums publishes quarterly print newsletter that is sent out to members in February, May, August, and November. We also maintain the blog on this page for members to share their announcements more immediately.

    The Brick Store Museum announces its new exhibition, 1968. The exhibit focuses on the year’s events, many of which contributed to 1968 being called “the year that changed the world.” The exhibition will run through November 11, 2018.

    Visitors to the exhibition are invited to share their own experiences from the 1960s, to contribute to the knowledge of the mid-20th Century collected at the Museum. Music of the period fills the exhibition with familiar sounds as photos of local and national events help to inspire memory.

    The purpose of the Museum’s 1968 exhibition is not solely to be a history display, but an active collection point for recent history. Sharing our history at the Museum will help future generations learn how people in the 1960s lived their lives. Topics covered in the exhibition include family life, Vietnam, protests and riots, civil rights, and the women’s movement. If you have stories to share, or wish to see what others have shared, visit the exhibition before it closes in November!

    The Maine Humanities Council thinks there is wisdom to be gained when 

    Mainers across the state get together to discuss important issues. 

    Throughout 2018 and 2019, we are offering programs and grants to help 

    spark public discussion on journalism’s role in creating an informed 

    citizenry and a vibrant democracy.


    Here are two ways to join the discussion this fall:


    1. GRANTS– 

    We are offering special grants for Maine non-profits wanting to explore 

    how we can stay well informed and the role being informed has in creating 

    a strong democracy. Projects might consider these or other related 

    questions: What do we need to know for a democracy to thrive? How do we 

    determine what to pay attention to when we are exposed to so much media 

    content? How can we identify hidden biases in information we consume? 

    What are some challenges social media platforms bring to traditional news 

    sources?  


    Applications are due October 15, 2018. See our website for an application 

    form and more information. WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO APPLY. All Maine non-profit 

    organizations are invited to apply, INCLUDING those that have already 

    received an MHC grant this year, or intend to apply for a grant in a

    2. PUBLIC PROGRAM- “What’s Going On with the News?"

    This is a panel discussion with journalists from the Bangor Daily News and 

    The Portland Press Herald accompanied a historian of journalism. Together 

    they will reflect on the contemporary challenges of reading and writing 

    about what’s really going on.


    These events are free and open to the public:

    September 19th, 7pm at the South Portland Auditorium 

    September 25th, 7pm at the Bangor Arts Exchange.

    The Maine State Museum in Augusta, Maine is advertising to fill a full-time Museum Education Specialist II position in the museum’s education division.  The Maine State Museum is currently open five days a week (Tue-Sat); the position would be required to work some weekend and evening hours. The position is responsible for developing and implementing innovative, engaging, and relevant gallery experiences for a wide range of visitors.  This position assists in training staff and volunteers; assists with the day-to-day operations of the museum public spaces and admission desk; and the development of special events.

     A well-qualified candidate is proficient in interdisciplinary, object-based teaching as well as interpretive writing, curriculum development, and the design of hands-on activities; knowledgeable of current inquiry-based pedagogy and teaching strategies; and has an interest in digital technologies and media for use in online and in-house interpretative projects.  Individuals with a natural science and/or STEM backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.

    Salary Range: $36,545.60 - $49,524.80.     Walter Iooss, whose work is on view in the exhibition Game Time: The Sports Photography of Walter Iooss, is an award-winning photographer focusing on sports and beauty. Iooss has worked for Sports Illustrated for more than 50 years, and his work has graced the cover of the magazine more than 300 times in his career.

    Event will take place Friday, June 8 in Given Auditorium, Bixler Art Building (next to Museum), and begin at 3:00pm. Parking is available in the Roberts Parking lot on Colby's Campus.

    Yarmouth Historical Society is seeking an energetic Museum Assistant for a 22 hour-a-week entry level position based in Yarmouth, Maine. The Museum Assistant will support all aspects of museum operation at the Yarmouth History Center, including public and school programs, collections and exhibitions, social media marketing, and customer service. The schedule is generally flexible, but Saturdays and occasional evenings are required

    Preferred qualifications: a bachelor’s degree in a related field, experience in customer service, enthusiasm for local history, and a strong willingness to support many facets of small nonprofit and museum operations. Excellent communication and organizational skills are required.

    The Washburn-Norlands Living History Center in Livermore, Maine, seeks a Live-In Caretaker for historic 19th century museum and farm. This is a year-round part-time position in exchange for rent-free housing in a 1-bedroom apartment, utilities included. The Caretaker is responsible for daily animal care, weekly cleaning of all buildings, general maintenance, program and event preparations and clean up, and overall site cleanliness and safety. Some restrictions on the use of the buildings/grounds apply. No pets or smoking allowed.

    The ideal candidate has experience working with large farm animals and maintaining or restoring old homes, loves animals, has a strong work ethic, is a self-starter, has a positive attitude, is flexible, and pays attention to detail.  He/She must have the ability to meet the physical demands of the position and perform farm work both indoors and out. This includes lifting a minimum of 50 pounds; standing for long periods of time; walking over uneven ground; and working outdoors in all types of weather.

    The Wilson Museum, Castine, Maine is seeking an enthusiastic individual to fill the position of Education Coordinator. This is a full-time, exempt position with main responsibilities for developing, promoting, and implementing the Museum’s education goals and programs. The candidate must have a college degree in an appropriate field; Education, Anthropology, History, or Museum Studies are most strongly desired. The Campus consists of seven buildings, including the Wilson Museum (1921), historic John Perkins House (1763-83), Doudiet House (Administration Office), Village Blacksmith, Woodworking Shop, and small exhibit building.     In conjunction with Game Time: The Sports Photography of Walter Iooss, journalist Jemele Hill of ESPN and The Undefeated—a digital publication focused on race, culture, and sports—will join in conversation with Justin McCann, curator of the exhibition. The two will discuss issues that sit at the intersection of sports and society with an emphasis on race and gender and the role of political activism in professional sports and journalism. This conversation will be followed by a light reception in the lobby of Dimond Building.

    Camp Tecumseh, Moultonborough, NH seeks a Processing Archivist for its 2018 summer season who is within commuting distance.  This non profit overnight summer camp for boys, founded in 1903 by three University of Pennsylvania Olympic athletes, is located on Lake Winnipesaukee.  See www.camptecumseh.net   The Camp Tecumseh Archives contains paper-based materials dating from 1903 to the present, many digital photographs and oral histories, and some artifacts.

    Possible archival tasks are:
    -- Accession any materials transferred or donated during the summer
    -- Develop selection criteria and processing scheme for large collection of digital and print photographs
    -- Re-house original film negatives; catalog digitized images
    -- Collect and digitize weekly newsletter
    -- Digitize Gilbert & Sullivan programs, marketing brochures if feasible
    -- Obtain bio info about trustees, creators/donors of archival materials
    -- Finish finding aid for Camp facilities records; determine if some may warrant digitization
    -- Provide research services to staff, trustees, and other inquirers including a senior staff member's weekly outreach efforts for campers

    An experienced consulting Archivist will make periodic visits to assist, and be available for consultation at all times.

    Qualifications.
    BA in relevant field; graduate of an MA or MLS program with archives management component and / or equivalent archives experience
    Strong oral and written communication skills
    Familiarity with archival theory and techniques: appraisal, accessioning , arrangement and description
    Familiarity with preservation practices, including digitization for access
    Familiarity with office software applications
    Ability to lift and move 40 lb containers

    During the weeks the Camp is in operation (June 23 - August 12, 2018) meals are available.

    Compensation commensurate with skills and experience.
