    Harness the Power:

    Great Tours + Maine's Tourism Industry = Museum Success

    What goes in to creating an in-demand, dynamic historic tour? And once you have a great tour, how do you tap into Maine’s well-developed tourism industry to promote what your organization has to offer? 

    Presented by members of the Biddeford Mills Museum, this workshop will help organizations/groups who wish to develop great quality historic tours, by sharing successful techniques for planning and executing a great tour program. Additionally, attendees will hear about the ways in which cultural organizations can take advantage of the marketing and advertising resources available through Maine’s well developed tourism industry. 

    The workshop will conclude with a full Pepperell Mills tour led by the Biddeford Mills Museum Mill Vets.

    Stick around after the workshop for a free MAM social mixer at the tasting room of the Banded Horn Brewing Company at 32 Main Street in downtown Biddeford, 4:30PM-6PM!


    Pepperell Mills Tour

    The historical tour is designed for those able to climb minimal stairs. Walking shoes should be worn. For safety reasons no open toed shoes are allowed. Children under the age of five (5) are discouraged from participating. A waiver is required to be signed for participation. An adult or guardian must sign for any participants under 18.


    Your Presenters

    The workshop will be presented by Board members and tour leaders from the Biddeford Mills Museum (BMM). The all-volunteer operated museum, and their incredibly successful tour program, have been an integral ingredient of Biddeford’s successful mill redevelopment over the last 10 years. BMM is a member of the Maine Tourism Association, and winner of the 2017 Originality Award at the Governor’s Conference on Tourism.


    The Venue

    Think Tank Biddeford is a professional coworking facility in the Pepperell Mill Campus in downtown Biddeford. Free parking is available at the public parking lot across Main Street on Foss Street. There are many other free public lots within a 5 minute walk.     Creating a Collections Policy

    Historical Societies and Museums start out with empty shelves and exhibit cases and are so grateful for any donation that comes in the door.  Now years later, the shelves are reaching capacity and donors want assurances their family heirlooms will be on display forever. 

    This is the time to create a collections policy that spells out what your institution will collect, strict protocols for deaccessioning prized family heirlooms in the public trust, and a document that backs you up when you say, "thanks, but no thanks." 

    Stick around after the workshop for a free tour and MAM social mixer with refreshments, 3-4PM!


    Your Presenter

    Cipperly Good, Curator/Collections Manager at Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport, as well as an independent museum professional with over 15 years experience in the collections management field, will lead this introduction to creating your collections policy. Cipperly is Principal of C.A. Good Museum Services, providing collections care and registration training, consultation, and project management, as well as exhibit services from concept to installation.


    The Venue

    The Washburn-Norlands Living History Center is Maine's oldest living history center and a multifaceted museum and working farm where costumed interpreters portray real people who lived in the area in the 1800s. 

    Upon arrival, park by the church and walk up the front drive towards the mansion. The workshop will be held in the Farmer's Cottage - the building between the mansion and barn (all connected). Enter the door to the right, that is next to the barn.

    How to Place Your Historical Society on the Map

    At this workshop, participants will create an interactive map of historically significant places in Washington County for users of computers, smart phones and tablets, using the OnCell mobile platform.


    Full description

    Mobile technology resides in nearly everyone's pockets. A smartphone is the most indispensable tool for people as they navigate their world. It is vital that cultural and heritage organizations seize the opportunity to meet visitors in their world and give them access to information through their devices. So how can organizations connect with visitors via mobile?

    We’ll begin this workshop with a short presentation on the benefits of mobile apps, including visitor engagement, points of access, and leveraging apps as a marketing tool. We’ll review the benefits of creating apps with a content management system, such as OnCell, which allows organizations to build and manage their own mobile apps to help them meet both visitor engagement and accessibility goals.

    During the bulk of this workshop, participants will work together to gather information about historical institutions in Eastern Maine and use the OnCell platform to create a prototype digital tour of sites of historical and cultural interest, showcasing the unique heritage of Downeast Maine.

    Participants will bring with them their wish list of sites to be included in the app, along with any supporting modern and historic images and scripts for an audio tour. We’ll use OnCell to record our scripts, and then build our tour stops using images and text transcriptions for each point of interest. We’ll then map the locations and set GPS alerts based on a visitor’s location, so they can easily discover nearby points of interest.


    Outcomes

    Participants will walk away with new ideas on how to approach mobile tech, a solid understanding of best practices, and creative inspiration to take back to their team.

    This session welcomes individuals across all career levels and positions as variety in perspective drives creativity and collaboration, both of which are essential to building a successful mobile strategy and app.

    Registration at least 2 weeks in advance is required so organizers can communicate with registrants about how to prepare for the workshop.  Participants will need to bring their own laptops.

    Check-in starts at 8:30AM.  The workshop starts at 9AM.

    Coffee will be available.  Bring your own bagged lunch to enjoy at half time!

    2017 Annual Conference


    The conference offers a mixture of sessions, workshops, networking opportunities, and a dynamic keynote address that will leave you feeling recharged, connected, and inspired with new ideas to assist you in the care and management of your collecting institution.  

    This year, the focus will be on Maine's upcoming bicentennial in 2020 and how your institution can be prepared for this once-in-a-lifetime celebration.


    Keynote speaker, Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr.

    The 2017 MAM conference will feature a dynamic keynote address from Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr.  Shettleworth has lectured and written extensively on Maine history and architecture.  He has served as Maine State Historian since 2004.  The longest serving State Historic Preservation Director, he filled this role in Maine from 1976 until 2015.  Shettleworth plans to present a lecture of images from Maine's centennial celebration in 1920.


    Event Program

    The doors will open for registration at 8:00AM and the last session will end at 4:30PM.  Tentative session topics include:

    • Assessing collections for possible deaccession
    • Crafting good metadata for digital collections
    • Forging and maintaining good partnerships with other organizations
    • Framing and communicating the story of your institution and your collections
    • Coordinating Maine's 2020 bicentennial celebration
    • Lots of other great discussion topics and networking opportunities!


    Lunch

    Lunch will be held in the dining hall with a multiple options.  Please tell us when registering if you have any dietary restrictions so we can make sure you are accommodated.


    Annual Meeting

    The annual meeting of MAM's membership also takes place at the conference each year--this is your chance as a MAM member to vote on new officers or changes in policy, or to address issues that affect the organization and its membership.

    The conference will be held at Spann Student Commons at Thomas College in Waterville.  

    Parking: We recommend you park cars behind the Alfond Athletic Center.
