Basic Collections Care

This all-day workshop will introduce you to basic collections care principles and practices and will cover the following topics

  1. What is preservation vs. conservation
  2. Environmental concerns
  3. How to survey and process collections
  4. What is provenance and what is the difference between finding original order and creating original order?
  5. Determining what re-housing materials you will need for your collections
  6. Accession records for manuscript versus artifacts.
  7. Staff and Volunteer management—how to optimize workflow

Attendees will also have an opportunity for on-hands archival work for better understanding of collections care.

The goal of this workshop is to familiarize attendees to the world of archival and special collections care from manuscripts to artifacts.

Attendees may stay after workshop to enjoy a tour of the Aroostook Country Genealogical Society collection and Caribou Public Library archives

Morning coffee and bagels are included with registration.

9:30-12:00 - Workshop part 1—theory and practice

12:00-1:00 - Lunch in the Caribou Room (enjoy your own or go to a local eatery 

1:00-3:30 Workshop part 2—hands-on work

3:30-4:30 Optional social mixer with refreshments in the Caribou Room
